What We Do

Transcendental Concord is an international online community of all ages where lovers of literature, philosophy, and history can come together to discuss, watch, listen and learn about the amazing writers and reformers who gathered in Concord from the 1830s to the 1860s.

Come join us!

Our Topics of focus

Not only do we love the main writers, Henry David Thoreau, Margaret Fuller, Ralph Waldo Emerson, but we also love to include the lesser-known authors, reformers, and all those who traveled in their circles. Not only are the 19th Century authors relevant, but their ideas can still be seen in modern articles, videos, and issues of today.

Instead of strictly limiting the group’s topics, the conversations are open and meandering: going down a rabbit hole of an obscure figure is just as much fun as relating antislavery issues to events of today.

Content & Conversation

Everyone is welcome to engage, share and learn!

On Facebook, the history nerds, lecture audiences, and avid readers can share and comment on links.

On YouTube, Concord Days is a series of conversations where an expert comes and shares their knowledge in a casual format, not a formal lecture.

On the audio podcast, Walden the Book, each episode is a deep dive into a few pages of Thoreau’s book and includes commentary about his references and places in town he talks about.

Tammy Rose is the core content creator and group admin. She was born and raised near Concord, and currently lives and works nearby. She is an award winning playwright with multiple works focusing on Henry David Thoreau. She is a licensed Concord Tourguide.

She started this as a series of projects to overcome the challenges of Covid and the limitations of gathering in person. Concord had traditionally served its visitors by creating social events around lectures, tours and museum visits. As a general fan, she wanted to move the casual, post lecture coffee-hours online. These platforms are a virtual way for everyone to be around the Transcendentalist discussion table.
